Hack Chair Series

The Hack Chair series is a collection of work demonstrating Gareth’s conceptually rigorous research into digital crafting techniques. A robotic 6 axis CNC arm, an extension of the craftsman’s hand and tacit knowledge, is programmed to hack a block of oak. By exploring the weaknesses, glitches, fractures, splits and rings of time stored within, a distorted Georgian archetype is extracted. Carving an artefact, a render, that could never have existed until the moment it was hacked. Both Hack Chairs I and II were both charred to preserve them for another century. Hack Chair III is the first 'Blonde' Hack Chair, which allows the viewer to see the timber in all its glory.
